Jack O' Lantern
Did you know that the origin of the delightful Halloween icon begins in Irish folklore, was first carved from a turnip and illuminated to protect homes and harvest from evil spirits? During the mid 1800s, Irish immigrants, anxious to continue the traditions of their homeland, found that the plentiful American pumpkin made for far more beautiful jack-o?-lanterns. So, remember, as you tramp through the twisted vines of your local patch, seeking out the most symmetrically shaped and spectacularly sized squash of the season from which to carve the most ghoulish of grins in carroty-colored flesh, that you become responsible for treasured traditions of generations past, perpetuating them for the enjoyment of pumpkin carvers yet to come.
