Pink Poinsettias Sometimes we get so caught up in the bustle of the season that we lose sight that it?s often the simplest, most humble of gifts, given straight from the heart, that have the most meaning. According to Mexican legend, a young girl named Pepita, too poor to bring a gift to the Christ child, was encouraged by her cousin, Pedro, to bring a humble gift. On her way to church, she gathered a bouquet of common Cuetlaxochitle, cultivated for centuries by the Aztecs who used them to make dye and considered them a symbol of purity. As they prayed at the manger, a miracle occurred, and the otherwise, common weeds were transformed into beautiful, star-shaped flowers, in brilliant shades of red, white, and pink. Pepita and Pedro?s modest gift became known as the Flowers of the Holy Night, symbolizing the star of Bethlehem and used to decorate nativity scenes throughout their country. In the 1820s, Joseph Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico, enchanted with their beauty and their Christmas Eve legend, brought them to the United States where the once humble gift of little children has become a familiar symbol of the season and, whether your favorite is red, white, or pink poinsettias, when given, are a token of goodwill, friendship, and joy.
